Ingredients in lip balms to avoid

Not all lip balms are created equal. One of the reasons I started making my own beauty products is because I started reading the ingredient labels in some of the most popular lip balms out there in the market and it terrified me! Let me begin by saying that we can’t escape every chemical in every product ever made, but there are products out there we should avoid.

Lets start with the most famous lip balm of all CHAPSTICK! It still surprises me that people still buy this stuff. Lets look at the ingredients for the classic chapstick.

Ingredients: PETROLATUM (44 %), Padimate O, Lanolin (1 %), Isopropyl Myristate (1 %), Cetyl Alcohol (0.5 %) Inactive Arachadyl Propionate, Camphor, Carnuba Wax, D&C Red #6 Barium Lake, Flavors, Isopropyl Lanolate, Methylparaben, MINERAL OIL, 2-octyldodecanol, Polyphenylmethylsiloxane 556, Propylparaben, Saccharin, Wax Paraffin, White Wax.

There is NOTHING good in this ingredients list, and I mean NOTHING!

Petrolatum – known to be possibly carcinogenic and expected to be toxic to the organ system; also a skin disruptor possibly damaging skin at deeper layer.

Padimate O – serious warnings exist for this chemical with links to cancer, organ and reproductive system toxicity; skin disruption; allergies; penetration enhancer.

Lanolin – immune system toxicity, this can damage the immune system’s ability to fight bugs.

Methylparaben – this is another serious problem chemical with links to cancer; organ system toxicity; immunotixicty and irritation to skin, eyes and lungs.

Propylparaben – a preservative and fragrance, similarly to above, has serious cancer related risks associated with its ingestion by humans.

Mineral oil – also for fragrance is considered possible carcinogenic and toxic to the reproductive system.

The list goes on! This is seriously a chemical cocktail, and chapstick is not the only one, other store brought brands are just as bad. I really wish these companies would start selling quality instead of junk. If you can’t be bothered with making your own lip balms then take a look on Etsy, you will find various shops such as mine, that sell natural lip balms that are actually good for your lips.

This is better…
